I am what I am: Franny Armstrong

Franny Armstrong, 35, is a documentary director. Her feature film The Age of Stupid was released on Friday (ageofstupid.net). She lives alone with her two cats in London
- My dad was a BBC documentary maker, always off to Africa; my mum was taking in homeless people. She was the local activist, he the global — I guess I got into both.
- I went to one of London’s most expensive schools. After witnessing the superiority complex that comes with extreme wealth, I wanted nothing more to do with it.
- My grandmother would walk for an hour to save 2p. She was what I call a profound environmentalist — it’s basically about not wasting.
- I’ve jumped in front of whaling ships and gone on demos, but I realised that instead of being in a crowd of 100,000, film was the most powerful thing I could do.
- Mike Skinner [of the Streets] once said that, through life, your skill levels go up and your momentum goes down. There’s a critical period, starting in your mid-twenties, when you can do your greatest work unencumbered by the baggage of life. It’s a very, very short window, possibly 10 years.
- The people working on climate change are the happiest I know. When you do everything you can, whether it fails or succeeds, then you can feel okay about yourself. It’s profoundly fulfilling to fight for something you believe in.
- The person I want to be with lives in another country, 26 hours away by train. Neither of us flies for personal reasons. He also works obsessively on climate change without a day off, so we never see each other.
- I’ve never been bothered about"

Mike Skinner gets off the streets | Music | The Guardian

Mike Skinner gets off the streets Music The Guardian: "Mike Skinner gets off the streetsFrancesca Martin guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 28 May 2008 00.06 BST Article historyHis music may tell tales of English urban life, but the Streets' Mike Skinner has just completed an epic walk from Britain to the south coast of France. Following in the footsteps of his hero Michael Palin, Skinner set off earlier this month from Dover with nothing but the clothes he was wearing and a few coins in his pocket, accompanied by three friends driving a Citroën C5. His journey was filmed for the video to The Escapist, a single from his forthcoming album.
'The road is lonely,' Skinner said, 'but the time to think straight is welcome. From a grey Dover I bid Albion farewell. Long live Michael Palin.'"

By David Balls, Entertainment Reporter

Rex FeaturesThe Streets was forced to cancel a gig last night after a last minute power failure at the venue.
The cancellation of the show at London's O2 Brixton Academy left rapper Mike Skinner 'heartbroken'.
'Tonight's Brixton show has been cancelled due to a power cut. Gutted. Not sure what to say really. I was really excited, turned up and no lights in the whole building,' he wrote on his MySpace blog.
'[The venue staff] phoned the power company, who weren't very helpful unfortunately. I'll keep you all posted but the sight of you all outside queuing is heartbreaking.'
Organisers are planning to reschedule the concert and urge everyone to keep hold of their tickets."

Dit mailtje konden we jullie echt niet onthouden:

Hello Streets people

It's fair to say that in the last week or so, Mike has taken quite a shine to Twitter. That, if you don't know already, is the hot new social website where you can tell people what you're up to in 140 characters or less. So far, Mike has posted 94 updates, telling us such things as how best to make tea, what he's having for dinner, which microphone Dr Dre recommends and whether or not his arms are in Moses-based agony.

If you'd like to join in the fun, then come follow him at www.twitter.com/skinnermike.

Mike Skinner was left injured following The Streets' gig at Cambridge Corn Exchange on Tuesday (January 27), after he hurt himself crowdsurfing.

Part-way through the band's set, Skinner dived into the crowd. As he was carried around the venue, one over-eager fan managed to get hold of the star's belt and refused to let go, leaving the singer in agony.

'Tonight someone held onto my belt so hard that my hernia scar from many years ago opened up to a bright red colour,' Skinner wrote on The Streets' MySpace. 'Looks like a wee organ might pop out of its purpley red bloody gash.'

After the gig, Skinner says a St John Ambulance attendant insisted that paramedics be called. When they arrived, the singer was told to cut down on his crowdsurfing and not let fans grab him so much.

'It seems the era of Moses is over,' Skinner joked on his blog."
